It seems that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is set to test Liverpool's resolve over Fernando Torres's future as they have placed a renewed £50m bid for the Spanish striker.

The Blues have already signed Benayoun from the Merseyside club, and Torres would be their second addition.

Chelsea's earlier bid of £40m had been rejected by the Merseyside Reds. The Reds' new manager, Roy Hodgson, had also made it clear in recent days that his star striker was not for sale and had warned Chelsea off making any further approaches.

But it seems that Chelsea are not ready to give up on their chase to sign the 26-year-old as they placed the record-breaking bid for Torres. The Spanish hitman has been the "double-winning" Blues' top transfer target this summer.

With the cash-strapped Reds looking for new owners, Chelsea will look to unsettle them with this massive bid.

Torres is a fan favourite in Anfield and he showed his love for the club when he sported a Liverpool scarf after winning the World Cup. It was speculated that this gesture on Torres's part, as well as his injury during the World Cup final, would put to rest all the transfer rumours around his future at Anfield.

But it seems Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has other plans. He has been a long-time-admirer of Liverpool's talismanic striker and looks to land him at any cost this summer.

With Liverpool facing severe cash crunch such a huge bid would be too tempting for them to refuse. It would provide them the much needed cash required to bring new reinforcements as the Merseyside outfit prepares to lose out a few star players.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are looking to add youth to their squad. At 26 years of age, Torres could be the ideal replacement for the talismanic Didier Drogba. But Torres is very injury prone, which has seen him unable to complete a full season for the Reds. That could be a problem for Chelsea too as they need to have a back-up if they do land the Spanish sensation.

But if the West Londoners are able to bring Torres to Stamford Bridge, it would be the biggest signing of this transfer window. It remains to be seen if Christian Purlsow can resist the tempting offer and keep the striker at Anfield for next season
